LIBRARIAN II/ BRANCH HEAD-MANAGER

This is a professional position requiring knowledge of library principles, practices and policies. It involves performing a wide range of professional library work including but not limited to public service, collection development and supervising personnel. The work is performed at a Library in the Birmingham Public Library system. Employee must have the ability to substitute at other library locations as needed. Work is reviewed through conferences and on the basis of results achieved. Works under the general guidance and direction of the regional coordinator.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
- Reports to Coordinator for assigned region.
- Oversees collection management for the branch and ensures compliance with the Birmingham Public Library Collection Development Policy.
- Ensures that library materials are circulated accurately and according to library policies and procedures and that these policies are carried out in a manner that ensures excellent customer relations.
- Prepares branch budget recommendations and manages budget in a timely and efficient manner; prepares various branch reports, documents and correspondence and maintains branch statistics.
- Conducts interviews and makes hiring recommendations for branch staff positions.
- Plans and oversees projects, evaluates workloads and adjusts staff assignments accordingly; monitors and orders branch supplies.
- Plans programs for children, teens, and adults.
- Organizes and provides outreach to neighborhood associations, schools, and other library partners. Works with elected officials and organizations in the community to promote library services.
- Assists in providing training to staff in policies and procedures, and training to staff and patrons in the use of library automated systems. Performs reference and bibliographic services for the public.
- Attends BPL and JCLC meetings (i.e., Collection Management and BPL and JCLC Youth Services, Reference Roundtable, etc.).
- Supervises and manages physical plant maintenance for the branch.
- Under the direction of the Coordinator sets goals and plans procedures for effective branch operations.
- Related work as required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge and understanding of practices, policies and procedures related to library operations and services.
- Knowledge and practice of good customer service skills. Ability to establish and maintain cordial and effective relationships with co-workers and patrons.
- Knowledge of and experience with computers and various computer software applications, peripherals, online databases, online searching, and the Internet. Understanding and knowledge of automated library circulation technology and procedures (experience with Innovative Interfaces is a plus).
- Ability to interpret library policies to the community groups and to the public.
- Ability to use independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Ability to be flexible, responsive, collaborative, and self-directed.
- Ability to supervise and motivate work teams by instruction and personal example.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Physical requirements include the ability to stand for long periods of time; eyesight sufficient to read and understand information from microforms and PC monitors, and the manual dexterity necessary for the regular use of PCs; ability to stoop, twist, turn and move materials from place to place in the library. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
The candidate must possess an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university supplemented by the attainment of a master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution. A minimum of two years in a professional library position working in a supervisory function is preferred. Background check is required.
80 hours biweekly, Grade 25, with annual beginning salary ranging from $47,424.00 to 52,374.40. All positions may include morning, afternoon, evening and weekend hours, including Sunday. Employees may be required to adapt to future schedule and location changes depending on library needs.
