BIRMINGHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY
LIBRARY COURIER/VAN DRIVER (Full-time)
CENTRAL LIBRARY

This is an entry level position requiring a valid Alabama Driver’s License.  Work involves the operation of a library vehicle and the transportation of library materials to and from various as needed.  Work involves loading and unloading, sorting and routing materials, and assisting in the Page Room.  Work also involves responsibility for a library vehicle, for keeping the vehicle clean and properly serviced.
 
EXAMPLES OF DUITES
  • Reports to Page Room Supervisor.
  • Loads and unloads library materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Drives van to and from area library locations as needed.
  • Plans most efficient route to destination – reads map(s) accurately.
  • Keeps track of issued documents and ensure that they are delivered time.
  • Maintains radio and telephone communication with the Pare Room Supervisor and immediately reports all incidents that affect operations.
  • Ensures passenger safety by observing all traffic laws, anticipating hazardous conditions and practicing defensive driving techniques.
  • Performs other related work as required. 
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIE
  • Knowledge and practice of good customer service skills and ability to establish cordial and effective relations with associates and patrons.
  • Knowledge of the principles of the operation of automotive equipment and preventive maintenance.
  • Knowledge of computers.
  • Knowledge of state traffic laws.
  • Knowledge of the geography of Jefferson County or the ability to learn the geography.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle safely and skillfully.
  • Ability to maintain and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to load and unload library materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to perform light manual labor, such as lifting boxes or furniture weighing 15-50 pounds.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with fellow employees and the public.
  • Ability to perform other related work as required 
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical requirements include the ability to stand for long periods of time; eyesight sufficient to read and understand information from microforms and PC monitors and the manual dexterity necessary for the regular use of PCs; ability to stoop, twist, turn and move materials in the library; ability to lift moderate weight up to 50 pounds in the handling of library materials; ability to push carts, bins and book trucks loaded with library materials weighing up to 100 pounds. 
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school, or GED; ability to read and write English and six months experience in the operation of a motor vehicle.  Possession of a valid State of Alabama driver's license, with no moving violations during the past three years that would prohibit insurance coverage. Background check is required.
 
BENEFITS
80 hours biweekly, Grade 11, with starting annual salary $24,481.60 to 26,998.40.  All positions may include morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours, including Sundays.  Employees may be required to adapt to future schedule and location changes depending on library needs.
