Birmingham Public Library participating in back to school rallies, supply give-aways

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Birmingham Public Library (BPL) will have booths at two back-to-school rallies in which free book bags of supplies will be given away on Saturday, July 29, 2017. Also Saturday, the Pratt City Branch Library is hosting a school supply giveaway in partnership with South Hampton K-8 School and Antioch Baptist Church in Pratt City.
 
The events are as follows:
The Rickey Smiley Foundation Birmingham Alive Fun Day, Saturday, July 29, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Legion Field.
 
The Rickey Smiley Foundation Birmingham Alive Fun Day staff is very thankful to have Birmingham Public Library as a vendor at this year’s event, said Jasmine Phillips, Birmingham Alive 2017 Vendor Coordinator. “This annual back to school event will bring families together for an afternoon of entertainment, games, recreational sporting activities and useful information along with resources in preparation for the upcoming school year.

Birmingham Alive is a back to school rally hosted by Birmingham native Rickey Smiley, a popular comedian and radio show host, and his Rickey Smiley Foundation. Sponsors include Coca Cola, Nike, 95.7 Jamz, and the City of Birmingham. The goal is the prepare children and youth of Birmingham to have a successful upcoming school year. From free health screenings, giving away back packs and school supplies, games and activities will be taking place.
 
“We felt like we were missing a key element in the event and we want to have a focus on Literary Education. That is where Birmingham Public Library can help,” Phillips said.
 
On Saturday, July 29, beginning at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., South Hampton School administrative staff will use Pratt City Branch Library’ meeting room to greet returning students and their parents.  Parents will be directed to library computers to complete online school registration as well as sign up the family for library cards, said Tracy Simpson, Pratt City Branch Manager.

Once their registration is complete, parents and students will be directed to a back-to-school rally at neighboring Antioch Baptist Church, 1220 Hattie St., for an event featuring games, food, music, live entertainment, and school supplies.  This event is sponsored by the North Pratt, Smithfield Estates, and South Pratt Neighborhood Associations.
 
The 22nd Annual R.E.S.P.EC.T. Rally taking place Saturday, July 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kelly Ingram Park in downtown Birmingham, hosted by More Than Conquerors Church. The R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Organization annual citywide Back To School Rally offers free book bags, school supplies, food and entertainment. Sponsors are Birmingham City Schools, BJCTA MAX Transit Advocacy Forum, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. 2nd Annual Back To School Rally (BTSR) at Urban Attic, 7623 1st Ave. North, Birmingham, AL 35206 on Saturday, Aug. 5 between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Free supplies will be given to the first 750 students. The backpacks (students must be present) include: folders, pencils, pens, crayons, glue stick, eraser, pencil sharpener, ruler and pencil pouch. There will be door prizes, vendors, lunches, massages, mail painting for girls aged 14 and under, and free haircuts for kids aged 14 and under.

Rotaract Club of Birmingham School Supply Giveaway, Saturday, Aug. 5 at the four BPL regional libraries: Springville Road, North Birmingham, Avondale and Five Points West. The free backpacks of supplies will be given away beginning at 10 a.m. until they run out. In all, Rotaract Club will give away 1,000 backpacks of supplies at the four regional libraries.
