Celebrate the holidays at the Birmingham Public Library
Programs include West End Christmas Concert, Healthy Cooking at Southside Library

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-The Birmingham Public Library System’s 19 locations kick off the 2017 holiday season this weekend. The Pratt City Library Holiday Open House will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2-4 p.m. Activities include free refreshments, holiday games and a live musical performance by Fee Fee Redmon. On Sunday, Dec. 3 from 3-4 p.m., storyteller Dolores Hydock performs “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote at the Central Library’s 4th Floor Arrington Auditorium, a popular holiday classic held at BPL for many years. 
  • On Monday, Dec. 4 at 3 p.m., North Avondale Branch Library will host “Best Holiday Story Ever!,” challenging patrons to write their best holiday story. Attendees will enjoy music, refreshments, and more.
  • At 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 4, the Central Library Youth Department Storycastle will host “Card-Making Holiday Program for Adults,” allowing patrons to make their own greeting cards (On Tuesday, Dec. 5, Southside Branch Library will also host a card-making program at 10:30 a.m. and Pratt City Library is hosting a card-making class at 11 a.m.)
  • “Kid-friendly Healthy Cooking with Chef E,” Tuesday, Dec. 5, 3:30 p.m. at North Avondale Branch Library. Southside Branch Library is also hostingHealthy Holiday Cooking With Chef E” featuring a cooking demonstration and healthy cooking tips at 3-4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7.
  •  At 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12, Pratt City Branch Library will host “Dinner on a Dollar General Budget,” featuring tips from Anne Cain, a registered dietitian/nutritionist and former cookbook editor.
  • West End Branch Library’s annual Christmas Musical on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 6:30-8 p.m., featuring Pastor Pisani Baldwin Standfield as MC and musical performances by The Carlton Reese Memorial Unity Choir and  The Force of Nature Jazz Band. The concert is sponsored by Birmingham City Councilor Sheila Tyson and Alabama State Rep. John Rogers.
  •   Powderly Branch Library is also hosting a Southwest Community Holiday Musical & Celebration featuring Regi Yarbrough & Co. from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14.

  • Tuesday, Dec. 5, 6:30 p.m. “Family Fun with Pete The Cat”- Help Pete the Cat save Christmas. Join us for stories, treats, games, and a souvenir photo with Santa Pete himself.

  • Sunday, Dec. 3 from 3-4 p.m., Dolores Hydock performs “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote.   • Monday, Dec. 4, 10 – 11:30 a.m., Card-Making Holiday Program for Adults – Visit us in the 2nd Floor Youth Storycastle and learn how to make greeting cards using inexpensive materials, many easily found in your own home.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 13, 12-1 p.m., “Money Matters Workshop: Holiday Shopping on a Budget”- Representatives from the Regions Institute for Financial Education in UAB’s Collat School of Business will  share tips on how to spend wisely during the holiday shopping season.

  • Wednesday, Dec. 20, 3:30 p.m., Readers Are Leaders Book Club - The Readers are Leaders Book Club to discuss this month’s book “Under the Christmas Tree” by Nikki Grimes.
  • Thursday, Dec. 21, 3:30 p.m. – Holiday Craft Party - Have fun making Christmas crafts while enjoying tasty treats!

  • Monday, Dec. 4 at 3 p.m., Best Holiday Story Ever! Participates are challenged to write their best holiday story. We’ll enjoy music, refreshments, and more.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m., A Holiday Storytime - Join us for a special storytime full of holiday cheer, stories, and more.
  • Monday, Dec. 11 at 3 p.m., Crafting with Kids: Gingerbread Houses –Join the fun and decorate a gingerbread house to take home. Supplies will be provided by the library.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 10:30 a.m. - Chapter Chatters Book Club Annual Holiday Party – the book club will celebrate and discuss new titles for the New Year.
