Make the Most of Your Money with New Financial Classes at the Birmingham Public Library
BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA – (November 8, 2013) Free classes on how to make better financial decisions for the future will be offered at the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) on Nov. 12 and Dec. 10. The sessions will be held in Arrington Auditorium at 12 p.m. and led by Andreas Rauterkus, associate professor of finance at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The Nov. 12 class will address saving and investing. Learn how to understand the various financial markets, evaluate different saving and investment options, find and utilize investment information, and develop ways to make better investment decisions.
The Dec. 10 class will address how to pay for college. Learn how to make the process more manageable with tips on evaluating college affordability, utilizing personal savings, and assessing the different forms of financial aid.
These programs are part of “MakingCents: Resources to help your money grow’’ and “Smart investing@your library® series,” a partnership between the American Library Association and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation.
BPL is one of 15 libraries in Jefferson and Shelby counties that started offering the series in September 2013. The programs will end in May 2014. Other BPL locations are Avondale, Five Points West, North Birmingham and Springville Road. Besides seminars, the locations have financial resources in print and online.
Jim Murray, head of BPL’s Business, Science and Technology Department, said that no one is born knowing how to save and invest; it’s something one has to learn. “And anytime you have a chance to attend a class that’s offered by someone with as much experience and knowledge that Dr. Rauterkus has, then you should try to take advantage of it,” Murray said.
Rauterkus said he’ll share easy-to-understand information on selecting the appropriate investment tools to reach specific financial goals.
