Get Ready for Spring with March 18 Gardening Class at Springville Road Library
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March 13, 2014) – The warmer weather has many ready to spruce up their yards. To help people get going with spring planting, horticulturist Cesar Warren will give a free class on Tuesday, March 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Springville Road Library, 1224 Old Springville Road.
He will address:
How to prepare the soil for planting
What type of soil amendments and soil conditioners to use
How to select the perfect annuals
What vegetables to plant
How to maintain beds
“Gardening is not hard. It’s an easy thing to do,’’ says Warren, of Warren’s Family Garden Center and Nursery in Clay. “Just remember that the amount of time you put into it, is what you get out of it.’’
Warren says the class is for any skill level. He’ll explain how to make beds look professional and how to get comfortable in planting annuals.
The class is one of several that will be held at Springville Road Library this year. On Tuesday, March 25, tips will be given on how to grow hot peppers. On Tuesday, April 8, master herbalist Darryl Patton of www.thesouthernherbalist.com, will lecture on the medical uses of native plants. All sessions are free and will be held at 6:30 p.m. Fall planting classes will be held later this year, says Kelly Laney, adult and teen librarian at Springville Road.
The 40 libraries in Jefferson County, including Springville Road and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, contain numerous books and videos on how to create beautiful gardens and yards. The Springville Road Library also has free soil test kits that people can use to collect soil samples and send to the Soil Testing Lab at Auburn University for analysis. The analysis, which costs $7 per sample when done at Auburn, provides fertilizer and lime recommendations.
