Engraving of Benjamin F. Roden who was a businessman in Birmingham, Alabama. He was the founder of the Avondale Land Company; was with the Avondale Mills for years; one of the founders of the Birmingham Gas and Electric Light Company and the Birmingham Chain Works; was president of the Central Coal Company and of the Birmingham Insurance Company; and a director of the Birmingham National and the Alabama National Bank. The B. F. Roden Grocery Company, founded by him as a retail store, developed into a great wholesale concern, of which he was president at the time of his death. He also constructed the first street car system in Birmingham and operated it for a number of years.

Engraving of Robert H. Pearson who was a lawyer and organized the Pearson Railroad and Development Company. He was director of the Birmingham Railway, Light and Power Company, and held interests in the Jefferson Coal and Coke Company, the Birmingham Gas Company, the Avondale Land Company, and the East Lake Land Company.
