The Birmingham Public Library has assembled a subject guide that contains a list of both government and commercial websites that provide information to assist individuals, families, and businesses in Alabama navigate the changes in health insurance created by the Affordable Care Act.
The subject guide consists of four sections. The first section consists of links to the websites of Alabama state government agencies that are involved in the implementation and management of the act’s provisions: the Alabama Department of Insurance, the Alabama Department of Public Health, and the Retirement Systems of Alabama. The second section includes links to several sites of those federal government agencies that have the most responsibility in overseeing and enforcing the act. Of particular importance in this section is HealthCare.gov, the federal government’s primary site for providing consumer information about the health insurance options available under the act. It also is the site where Alabamians can enroll in a Marketplace insurance plan.
Two commercial sites are included in section three: U.S. News and World Report's Health Insurance Guide and LegalConsumer.com. Both offer clear and concise overviews of the law’s provisions and their specific effects on the citizens of Alabama.
The fourth section consists of a series of short videos produced by the federal government and posted on the HealthCare.gov website. The videos provide information about the new health insurance marketplace stipulations for individuals, families, and small businesses.
